These colourful and unique African print fabric face masks are attractive and stylish to wear. The high quality 100% cotton is both breathable and comfortable, which is essential if you are planning to wear them for long periods of time.
Kitenge is using their African print fabric offcuts to make these masks so they are sustainable as well as an eco-friendly alternative to disposable paper masks. Each purchase helps to support the livelihoods of our tailors in Tanzania, East Africa, as private orders from local customers have dried up due to the pandemic.
Some of the masks will have different fabric on the front, back and ties so they will be totally unique! Each set of 5 masks comes in an assortment of different colours and ankara fabric.
The pleated mask, with fabric ties that are easily adjustable, includes a filter pocket. There are different types of filters that you can use including paper towels and coffee filters. Cut your chosen filters to 4 x 4.5 inches (10 x 14cm) with a curved edge at the top and bottom to fit inside the masks. Filters need to be discarded after each use before washing and ironing the masks.
The correct way to wear the mask is with the pleats facing downwards. When wearing a mask you should avoid touching it and wash your hands immediately if you do. When removing the face mask, be careful not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth and wash your hands immediately after removing.
Disclaimer: wearing a mask does not mean that you do not need to socially distance or wash your hands often – doing all three together is essential. Fabric masks help give basic protection to everyone involved but are not medically approved or 100% guaranteed to protect you from viruses. Fabric masks are not as effective as N95 or surgical masks. These masks need to be reserved for healthcare professionals.
Wash (or disinfect) the masks before first use and after each use immediately after removing. The masks can either be hand-washed or washed in a machine in hot water (40 degrees) with detergent. After washing, the masks should be ironed using a high heat preferably with steam.
A delicate cycle is best and the masks can be put inside a delicates bag when washed in the machine to stop the ties from getting tangled. The fabric ties can also be loosely tied before machine washing and drying.
The masks can dry naturally or be tumble dried on a hot cycle for maximum effectiveness. The mask may bunch up after being tumble dried but will return to normal after the pleats have been ironed.
