Festive Sewing and Craft Ideas

Are you in a Christmas crafty mood and want to add some personal handmade touches to your home decorations or perhaps presents under the tree? We’ve got some fabulous ideas to keep you busy and entertained, some of which do not require a sewing machine.

1) Tree Decorations

It’s always fun to make your own creative Christmas tree decorations that last for years and are a joy to see again when you unwrap them year after year from your storage box. You’ll also feel proud when visitors ask where you bought such lovely decorations from!

Fabric ornaments can be easily made using leftover fabric scraps and won’t get damaged if they fall from the tree. They can also be given as gifts to hang in the home. The below video shows how to make cute and low-cost fabric hearts (or other shapes like a star or Christmas tree) easily in just 5 minutes.

What You’ll Need:

You’ll need some sturdy fabric (like cotton), a pair of paper scissors, fabric scissors, a pen, a piece of paper, pins, stuffing (or fabric scraps), and a sewing machine (or needle and thread). You could also add embroidery or personalise these decorations and use felt, patchwork or iron on patches.

2) Cards

Nothing beats a creative card that’s been handmade with a love and thought. Could you make your own handcrafted cards for your loved ones this year by using leftover fabric scraps for decoration? The below video demonstrates a great Christmas card design idea using fabric.

What You’ll Need:

You’ll need some card blanks and envelopes, cotton fat quarters (can be Christmas themed if you like such as tartan), ribbon, a glue gun, a bow maker (optional), paper to create the patterns, thread, pins and a sewing machine if you would like to use a zig-zag stitch for the applique designs such as a Christmas tree, present, bauble, gingerbread man and star.

3) Stockings

Making Christmas stockings is a fast, easy and suitable project for sewers of any level. A variety of different materials can be used for the outer fabric and inside lining. It’s best to make a simple design that can be personalised with a name or initials on the cuff. You can get creative by adding appliques or embroidery to the design before sewing the stocking pieces together.
